The only true geranium is knows as Geranium macrorrhuzum L but many hybrids have been created from the Pelargonium species in which this oil is obtained. In subtropical climates this plant is a perennial but in temperate climates it is an annual in which it dies in winter. The main areas of cultivation are on Reunion, an island east of Madagascar, Africa, and Europe, but is also found to grow wild in South Africa. Known as one of the best natural perfumes, it is used in soaps and detergents, not only for its aroma but also since it is not affected by the alkalinity of soaps.
