Product Abstract: From a shade-loving, annual, aromatic herb, Pogostemom cablin Benth, that is native to south-east Asian countries, but is cultivated around the world, but extensively in Indonesia, India, and Malaysia, and, to a lesser extent, Madagascar, Seychelles, Brazil and Paraguay. The name is derived from the Tamil word “patchai” in which “patch” means green and “ellai” means leaf. Originally used medicinally to heal burns, calm nerves and control the appetite, It was brought to Europe through the wrapping of shawls in patchouli, where it was used as a moth repellent. It was also used to protect from bed bugs and as shampoo when mixed with lemongrass. Today, it is used on aromatherapy to calm nerves, and relieve depression and stress. Other areas where this product is used in the perfume and cosmetic industries, where it provides a unique scent and helps to alleviate acne-prone conditions, eczema, inflammation, cracked, chapped and irritated skin. It is also shown to possess anti-fungal, anti-insecticidal, and bacteriostatic properties to help with ailments like athlete’s foot and dandruff. This is also used as a flavouring agent in many foods including carbonated beverages and seasonings.
